Lunch tour over Mont Cindre with a Fourviere as a bonus. Fourviere and the city center had a very heavy police presence for the funeral of the former mayor Gerard Columb.

Towpath between Villeurbanne and Lyon

I took a Ve'lov bike up to the Laurent Bonnevay bus station then came back on the towpath first along the Canal de Jonage which joins the Rhone river at Feyssine.

Mont d'Or tour via the route de Mont Thou

After yesterday's run a gentle tour out to the Mountains of Mont d'Or and the Mont Thou climb from St Romain. This is a very quiet hairpinned road that is never too steep.

Fourvière dog attack

A lunch run to the hill of Fourvière between the rain storms, which are incessant this year. Run up ok apart from the end of the steep staircase and took a slightly longer route for the descent.

Night Tete d'Or

New PR for the tour of the Tete d'Or, 21m38 (5m39) about 25 seconds faster. Didn't feel great at first and couldn't find a good rythm and not always easy to see in the dark.

Mont Thou Skating via the Route du Génie

An alternative route to Mont Thou in the Lyonnais Mont d'Or range. It seemed ok on paper, apart from a steep section of 1km before the turn onto the route du Genie and so it proved.

4x1k intervals in the park

Testing out my workout program on the fitness watch by doing my 4 x 1km training run. Intervals were 4.59 dropping to 5.15 on the last interval with a 90s-2m rest in between intervals.

Tour of the Monts d'Or

I wanted to try a longer tour of the Mont d'Or above Lyon returning to the Chemin du Tignot which I haven't ridden for a decade. It is as poorly surfaced as ever, well worse than that.

Fourvière descent by the 800 steps

Run up through the gardens to Fourviere, descent via the staircase to St Paul which apparently has 796 steps. Weather kept the tourists at bay.

Probably my last Grand Col this year. Well I'd not been that active either. The Glandon in freezing conditions at the end of May and then an abortive attempt at the Madeleine in August.

Caluire-et-Cuire Hill

Caluire-et-Cuire is one of the hills of Lyon to the NW of the city center. La Croix Rousse district is at the southern end of the hill. The summit of the hill is 275 meters.

Col du Saint SaturninA quiet col close to Chambery. The col is marked by the Croix de Bon SecoursOn the North Side, start at Chambery le Haut. Climb is 1.5km long with the main section around 7%.

Geraldine woke at 6.30; we’d planned to get up an hour earlier. After a cool shower we were on our way at 7.15. Not a moment too soon. It was already warm and humid.

I wanted to tackle the Madeleine via Montgellafrey as I hadn't done this climb before. It is a little back road but not that quiet. On paper the climb is just 7.7% over 13km.

This route is all front loaded. The first 3km climb 200 meters, things are then a bit easier, another 200m over 4.5km to bring the total distance to 7.5km with the descent just 1.

Rollerski climb to the Madonna del Sasso (Madonna of the cliff). A church positioned above a 250 rock wall.

Coiromonte; Orta; Italy

This climb is a nice little switchback road which means the descent, on foot, is fairly short.  The descent is down a steep track from the chapel and fairly quick.

A couple of minutes off my March 2022 time but it was probably colder 10C on the climb and 12C in the valley with drizzle. However a PR on the flat section, a phyrric victory :-).

Col des Mouilles in the sun

Last year I was dissapointed to have climbed in 58 minutes. This year, almost the same time to the second and I'm quite pleased with a VAM of 784m.

Loop di Loop

Took a while to get warmed up. The road is pretty rough, the spring gravel has achieved nothing and there were some big stones that have rolled off the verges near the start.

Posted as the route around Pettenasco is interesting. 1.5km by the lake, 1km on a small loop through the village with a climb then 1.5km return giving just 4km overall.

Passo della Colma from Varello; Piedmont; Italy

Passo della Colma is 8.9 kilometers long for an elevation gain of 490 meters giving an average gradient of 5.1%. The climb starts near the historic town of Varallo, which is worth a detour.

I wondered what the Route du Mont Thou would be like rollerskiing. It is possible to climb all the way to Mont Thou by turning right at the Hameau du Mont Thou but the road is very steep.

Ste Agnes St Mury commute via the Balcons of the Belledonne

A commute via St Mury. It took  a bit of discipline to get up and go at 6.45 given the damp and gray skies. VAM of 817 for the climb. A bit slower than last year when I was riding around 880.

St Mury Monteymond - route de Lancey

V. slow 35 minutes for the climb compared to a PR of 27m. Clearly a long way off my best, is it just tiredness or lack of riding this year? It is not as if I've done no sport but a lot of 5km runs.
