The Savoie (Savoy) department is situated in the Northern Alps region. It covers an area of over 6,000 km2 much of which is mountainous. With over 55 ski resorts it has one of the largest concentrations of lift served skiing in the world. The department is also home to France's first national park, the Vanoise, created in the 1960s. This protected zone is a mecca for ski tourers and a haven of peace for many species of animal including chamois and even wolves. The department is named after the former Duchy of Savoie, an independent state until the 1860s. The region retains a strong identity and a local dialect.
