Ski-Areas > Northern Alps > Savoie (73) > Tarentaise > Montalbert
The ski resort of Montalbert is located in the Tarentaise valley of the Savoie department in the Northern Alps region. It is on the la Plagne side of the Paradiski ski domain. The lift served area extends from 1350 metres to 3200 metres. Including la Plagne there are 425 km of lift served runs.
At 1350 meters it might not be on the list of highest resorts but the skiing can be as good as anywhere else in the Alps. The slopes are north facing and sit in a clearing in the forest. The tree lined slopes keep their snow better than a lot of high altitude resorts. Access to the La Plagne domain is served by the lifts which take you first to 1600m then on to le Fournelet at 1970 meters. From there you catch lifts to Plagne Centre (2000 meters). The resort suits mixed parties very well and is a good place to take the kids. The prices for accomodation are very reasonable and the bars and restaurants do not carry a premium price tag either.

There are a lot of interesting off piste routes in the Adrets valley and from the back of Le Biolley where four black runs start from L'etroit, Morbleu, Les Coqs and Pelsemblueu. The village is small and is not in the same league as Val d'Isère or Tignes however with a qualified guide you can get to some excellent off piste and the chances are that you will find untracked runs a long time after fresh snow (unlike some other resorts). As a bonus you have access to the whole la Plagne off piste ski domain and can even explore other resorts in the Tarentaise valley with a six day or longer lift pass.
Nearest Airport(s): Chambéry 1hr 20mins, Grenoble St Geoirs 2 hour 05 mins, Lyon Saint-Exupery 2 hours. Geneva Cointrin 2hours 20 mins. Turin Caselle 3 hours. Driving times assume good road conditions and off-peak.
Road: Take the A430 to Moutiers and keep in the left hand lane heading toward Tarantaise/Bourg St Maurice N90. After about 10 km bear left into Aime follow the signs for La Plagne. Keep on the main road, after the second small roundabout bear right. The road passes the 'Aire de Chainage' where it will warn you if snow chains are needed. After 600 meters turn right into the D88 sign posted Longefoy/ Montalbert. Montalbert is 2km past Longefoy
Rail: Moutiers, Aime, Bourg St Maurice TGV and Eurostar all stop here
The newly built La Bergerie de Montalbert offers superb accomodation with excellent access and amazing uninterupted views of the the Tarentaise Valley. The chalet style apartment block is at the foot of the slopes and in the heart of the village 50 meters to the closest lift.

For a small village, Montalbert has a good selection of bars and restaurants. Le Trappeurs has French and Italian food. Skanapia is traditional French. The owner Benoir is a great character.Le Cassoulet has traditional French and home made Pizza. La Luge sells excellent Pizza and fresh salads. For Bars try Sports Passion with their own darts board and La Tourmonte. The new owners are very friendly, the menu is great and they have a pool table. For mountain ambiance go to the Fourporet. Give them a call and they will collect you in there mini bus. Excelent Tartiflette and Fondues with an open log fire.
