For Gigi, our resident fashionista, who never says no to a good day out shopping, Val d'Isère proved to be an interesting experience. As well as a very good newsagent selling the usual gossipy magazines (Now, Elle and so forth) which every girl likes reading on her winter hols, she bought a good number of paperbacks which even WHSmith might not yet have in stock.
On the clothes front, Val d'Isere's main streer offers a sensational, or so I'm told, range of trendy surfy type shops such as Quiksilver, Poivre Blanc etc. Here you can buy anything from a skimpy little clubbing outfit (to be used on the spot, there and then in either Dicks or the Pacific bar) or a sexy little T-shirt to a thick but trendy fleece. Gigi also found a fun shop called Boobs which strangely enough doesn't sell bras and panties (except for comfy, cutesy warm pyjamas) but fun items including radios, sewing kits and, well any type of junk which boys would hate but girls adore having in their bathroom.
More traditionally, you will find a fair number of ski shops selling the latest range of ski suits as well as thermal underwear such as Odlo, Helly Hansen and so on. Apparently rusty orange is the new black this year (2003) at least until the end of March when bright pink takes over.... A non-skiing girl can always keep herself busy in Val!
