The ski resort of Serre Chevalier is situated in the Briançonnais area of the Hautes-Alpes department in the Southern Alps region. The lift served area extends from 1200 metres to 2800 metres. There are 250 km of lift served runs. There are 45 km of cross country trails. The resort features a snowpark.
The Ski Area of Serre Chevalier is divided into a number of villages: Monêtier-les-Bains, Chantemerle, Saint-Chaffrey, Briançon, Prorel.
Monêtier-les-Bains is situated at 1500 meters altitude on the Hautes-Alpes side of the Lauteret road pass. It is the principal village in the canton and its territory includes a number of other villages including Saint-Chaffrey, le Lautaret and le Casset.
The name reflects the hot thermal springs found in the village. Known since Roman times when the village was called Stabatio Monêtier refers to a Monastry (Monestier) situated in the commune in the middle ages. The resort is redeveloping the spa side of its activity with the opening of a acquatic center in 2008.
