Far from the ski factories and autoroutes of the Savoie the Southern Alpes have retained much of their mountain charm.
The Hautes-Alpes are protected by the natural barrier of the Col du Lautaret to the north-west and the col de la Bonnette to the south and are probably the most inaccessible of the French resorts. Indeed access is easiest from Italy and Turin's international airport.
