The ski resort of Château Ville-Vieille is situated in the Queyras area of the Hautes-Alpes department in the Southern Alps region. It is part of the Tout Queyras ski domain. The lift served area extends from 1325 metres to 1570 metres. There are 2 km of lift served runs. There are 12 km of cross country trails.
Noted for its low altitude the town is protected by Fort-Queyras, a citadel dating from the middle-ages, later restored by Vauban as part of France's defence network. The cote of arms featuring 8 locks symbolises the republic of the Escartons, Europe's first, that governed the area from the 14th century until the time of the revolution. Each of the 8 areas had to pay an annual rent of 4,000 golden ducats to the French king.
