Chatel is still a traditional and charming village with plenty of evident history. Chatel is at the top end of the Abondance valley which was established by a colony of Monks back in the 5th Century. The Abondance Valley also famous for it's cheese, has three villages, namely Abondance, La Chapelle and then Chatel. As the population expanded and farmers sought for places to graze their cattle, the village of La Chapelle was formed. Approximately 400 years ago, due to the population expansion once more, the poor peasant farmers were encouraged to take their cattle here to the mountainous area which was deemed to have few other uses than pastureland for grazing. In 1948, Chatel implemented it's first Ski lift near to Lake Vonnes and the ski industry was born. The people of Chatel are very passionate about there village and exceptionally warm and friendly, many of those being from families who have lived here since the first people came.
PisteHors.com is principally an off-piste and backcountry ski and snowboard site. Please share your favourite routes in and around this resort. If the description is too long think about putting it in a sub page. The sub-page should always be preceeded by the resort name e.g.
La Leche, Linga Chatel - this is probably one of the most famous off piste areas in Chatel. At the top of the Linga piste, traverse right (above the blue run) keeping high. This eventually takes you over the shoulder and into an excellent powder bowl. Pick you route down, and at the bottom take the track which is over to the left. Rather conveniently this pops you out of the trees at the bottom of a drag lift.
