Dutch Snowboarders Killed by Cliff Fall

Two Dutch snowboarders have been killed in the Grandes Rousses area in the ski resort of l’Alpe d’Huez after apparently getting disorientated while riding off-piste.

Snow and Avalanche Report

The strong south / south east winds (fohn) over last weekend left a deposit of red Saharan sand over much of the Alps and lead to the formation of a number of slabs on north facing slopes as some backcountry skiers found to their cost.  Apart from the incidents recorded by PisteHors.com a Chamonix guide was killed on the Italian side of Mont Blanc earlier in the week.

No Sign of Missing Snowshoers

Despite an extensive ground based search no trace of the missing Savoie snowshoers has been found.  The operation will continue over a wider area on Thursday but with fewer men and no helicopter due to the poor weather.

Boarder’s Death in Méribel Fall

A short report about this accident appears on PisteHors.com on the 17th February. The tragic death of the 17 year old British boarder appears to involve certain elements that could possibly have avoided this terrible accident.

Two Savoie Snowshoers Missing

A search for two snowshoers, a man and a woman in their 50s, missing since Sunday, has restarted this morning.  The alert was given by their bosses who were concerned after they didn’t arrive for work on Monday.

Off-Piste Skier Killed in Valloire

A member of skipass.com has reported that a skier was killed in the Sétaz sector adjacent to the pistes.  The man was found after a search operation that lasted 20 minutes. He was found in a state of cardiac arrest and hypothermia.

Woman Killed by Isère Avalanche

Two ski mountaineers have been hit by an avalanche in the Belledonne mountain range in the French Alps.  A 19 year old woman, Marie Gros-Perrin and resident of Cognin in the Savoie, was killed and a 28 year old man, Cédric Charvet, resident of Bassens in the Savoie, is in a serious condition in the University Hospital at la Tronche.

Fatal Avalanche at la Rosière

A 37 year old local man has been killed by an avalanche close to the ski resort of la Rosière in the Savoie department.  The man and a friend were ski touring when they were hit by the slide in the Mont Valezan sector.
