Two soldiers from specialized mountain units have been involved in an avalanche incident near the Pointe de Gargan (2767m) in the Beaufortain mountain range yesterday. The men were on a training exercise and knew the area well. The avalanche was a natural snow slide from a cornice and occurred in the early afternoon. The victims were climbing at the time. One of the soldiers was killed by the slide, the other was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
There was little refreeze in the snow-pack in the sector on Thursday morning with evidence of natural snow slides.
