A 44 year old woman has been killed by an avalanche in the Combe de Barmerousse not far from the aiguille de Varan (2544m) in the commune of Passy near Chamonix. The avalanche occurred around 12h30. Destabilized by a small slide the victim fell 50 meters over cliffs. She was part of a group of 5 ski tourers. The avalanche risk was 3/5 in the sector and the bulletin mentioned the risk of small soft snow avalanches on all slope aspects formed by strong winds from various directions.
She has been named as Anne Revilliod, a passionate and key staff member of the Société de prévention et de secours en montagne de Chamonix (known as "la Chamoniarde"). Her death has shocked her colleagues.
