Description

The ski resort of Hohwald - Champ du Feu is situated in the Bas-Rhin department in the Vosges region. The lift served area extends from 600 metres to 1100 metres. There are 19.5 km of lift served runs. There are 120 km of cross country trails.

History

The Champ du Feu has been a leader in many trends in skiing

  • first snow canons in Europe installed in 1963
  • first floodlit run in 1965
  • cross country piste preparation with a machine in 1983
  • a project for snow canons for the cross country ski runs (now being followed, somewhat controversially) at Autrans in the Vercors. The project was never realized.

Snow canons were used at the Champ du Feu for the first time on the 26th October 1963. Oh yes the season started earlier in those days. The resort had installed six canons. Marcel Adam, who ran the ski lifts, had installed the system in conjunction with the inventor of the "Snow Maker". He'd even brought an engineer over from the USA to help. (Presumable from Larchmont Farms, an irrigation company that was an early pioneer of snowmaking).
