The Beaufortain area is situated in the Northern Alps region. Part of the pre-Alps it gets blasted by any storm coming off the north-Atlantic and the snow cover can be prodigous compared to the drier Tarentaise.
The Pierra Menta ski touring competition, named after the characteristic Pierra Menta peak is considered to be one of the must do events on the calendar and attracts top class athletes from around the world. The mountain range is relatively untouched compared with the rest of the Savoie although the ski resort of Arêches-Beaufort has plans to expand its uplift capacity in a project that is very controversial with environmental groups. The mountains are famous for Beaufort cheese.
