Ski Areas > Northern Alps > Belledonne > Rivier d'Allemont > Pic Lamartine east face
From lArticol (just before the Rivier dAllemond) take the path that leads to the cabane du Gay. From the Lac de la Balmette there are two alternatives: either the combe du Col de la Balmette or a parallel valley further to the north. Climb to the notch below the pic. The summit can be reached by the south-east ridge.

We tacked a variant that you could call the tour of the Pic Lamartine. Starting from Articol we climbed by the col de la Balmette route than took the slopes to the right which rejoin the ridge. Jean and David S climbed to the Balmette.
We didnt climb to the summit but plunged onto the slopes on the other side that join the lac de la Balmette. The snow was powder at the top then more solid on the steep section of 35°. This valley remains both wild and beautiful.
We traversed to the passage des rochailles (always watch the slopes above as there are frequent snow slides from above, today most had already slid). We then skied over a small col and down into the combe de roche noire on good powder, a bit dense in places but much better than the steep track that leads to the micro-car park at Articol. Fantastic trip with almost no-one on the mountain except our group. Thanks to Jean for his excellent pic-nic.
