A 72 year old skier, reported missing since Thursday evening in the ski resort of Menuires has been found dead in the Boismint sector of neighbouring Val Thorens this morning. He was skiing alone and his wife gave the alert at 20h00 when he failed to return to the resort. The rescue services searched all night and the man's body was spotted by an air search at 08h00.
It appears the man was buried by a slab type avalanche triggered as he crossed a slope at 2080 meters. He was not wearing an avalanche beacon. There had been around 10cm of fresh snow in the sector with storm force southerly winds. The bulletin gave the risk as 3 above 2000 meters and warned of skier triggered slabs on North to East sector slopes above 1800 meters altitude.
