Police crack down on off piste skiers

During the holiday period the Savoie Gendarmerie and agents from the Parc national de la Vanoise and the Office of Biodiversity have been controlling off piste skiers n the 3 Valleys ski area; especially on the south facing slopes of the Mont Vallon which lead to the Tuéda nature reserve. The aim is to check skiers who are skiing in the reserve. The officials have been educating and also fining more blatant contraventions.

Created in 1990 the Tuéda nature reserve extends from the lac de Tuéda to the bottom of the glacier de Gébroulaz and covers an area of 1,112 hectares from 1650 meters altitude to 3153 meters. The reserve is home to 545 plant species and 400 types of animal. Off piste skiing and ski touring is prohibited except on certain routes (see map). The "zones de quiétude" are strictly out of bounds when there is snow on the ground.
