Description

Where to go? Another avalanche alert, resorts and pistes shut. Clearly we'd need to stay below 2000m and given the claggy cloud somewhere with tree line skiing. We thought about Autrans but en-route we decided to go to the Montagne de Lans as it is about 20 minutes closer. The resort was not too busy at 2pm, still lots of car parking space. A mix of locals and tourists in the car park. We did much the same as last time, traversing back across the mountain from north to south. There were a couple of small waits at the lifts but these cleared out and for 2 hours we climbed and skied. In general the pistes were good but a bit lumpy in places which was not always fun in the low visibility. Surprisingly we did a bit less distance than last visit, probably due to the pistes. The resort only has drag lifts so you have to be prepared to be on your feet all the time.

We didn't take the Combe de l'Ours off piste route due to the potential avalanche risk and low viz but it was officially open and other skiers were taking it.

Conditions

3C at the parking. Avalanche risk 4/5. Lots of fresh snow but quite heavy off piste. Low cloud on the summits but viz not too bad. Very icy snow on the drag lifts.
