Two skiers have been caught in by an on piste avalanche at Praz de Lys Sommand. The Lac piste, a blue run, was open at the time. The avalanche occurred at 1900m at around 12h30 and descended the east facing slopes from the Pointe Perret (1941m). A 40 year old man was buried under 3 meters of snow. He was rescued without injury after 30 minutes. An English woman, aged 45 was carried 200 meters by the slide but managed to remain on the surface and was also uninjured. The piste patrol said it was a wet snow slide, more typical in the spring. The piste was closed to Thursday.
The avalanche risk was 2 (Moderate) at the time of the accident. The bulletin had highlighted natural full depth avalanches as one of the principal risks on all slope aspects below 2500 meters especially on grassy or slick rocks. Avalanches of size 2 or 3 were possible at any time of day. It also warned of wet snow slides at the warmest hours of the day, although smaller in size. the zero isotherm was at 3000 meters.
