Report on the “Retour d’Est” – April 16–17, 2025

The recent “Retour d’Est” weather event brought impressive snowfall totals across the French Alps, particularly in the regions around the sources of the Arc and Isère rivers. The highest April snowfall since 1962 in some areas according to Meteo France.

The highest accumulations were recorded at:

• Petite-Gouille (Sainte-Foy, 2410 m): 114 cm
• Sous les Barmes (Val d’Isère, 2350 m): 113 cm
• Tignes (2084 m): 105 cm
• Bonneval (2741 m): 104 cm

Official snow-weather observation :

• Tignes (2080 m): 134 cm
• Les Arcs (2040 m): 111 cm

The Vanoise area was especially affected, with major snowfall recorded at:

• Bellecôte (2992 m): 113 cm
• Val Thorens (2277 m): 89 cm

In the Mont-Blanc range, noteworthy totals include:

• Le Couvercle snow post (2758 m): 84 cm

Some of these measurements even set new daily snowfall records (regardless of the season) for official nivo-meteo observers:

• Tignes (2080 m): 99 cm
• Les Arcs (2040 m): 99 cm
• Val d’Isère (1854 m): 88 cm
• Val Thorens (2283 m): 87 cm
• La Rosière (1867 m): 85 cm
• Courchevel (1780 m): 78 cm
