Cornice accident in the Vosges

We talked about the dangers of cornices recently. This weekend the mountain rescue (Peleton de Gendarmerie and Fire Services) had a difficult night rescue in the Vosges. A father, accompanied by his two teenage kids were admiring the night view of the Alsace plain when the cornice they were standing on collapsed under the weight of the dad. Fortunately he'd asked his kids to keep back from the edge and only the father fell, some 120 meters on a steep slope. Eye witnesses alerted the rescue services and took care of the children. Fortunately the victim was rescued without injury. The PGM has warned of the real risk of avalanches and cornices in the Vosges mountains and warned backcountry travellers to keep well clear of any edges and to stick to marked trails.
