Eyesore carpark at Valmeinier to be demolished

An enormous car-park at the entrance of the ski resort of Valmeinier will have to be demolished without ever seeing a single car. The blot on the landscape cost five million euros, not including the demolition costs. The resort does have a serious problem with parking spaces but a local sued the council and won. All appeals have now been exhausted. The current mayor, Martine Noraz, was elected in 2008 on a ticket opposing the car park. "It gets rid of a thorn in my side", she told journalists. Demolition is not straightforward as the car park also forms part of the structure of the road to accomodation. People in favour of the project think they should have ignored the courts and opened the car park regardless as a "fait accompli".
