Yellow alert for avalanches in France

The French Northern Alps, Pyrenees and Corsica are on yellow alert for avalanches today. After considerable snowfall earlier in the week some areas have seen up to 30cm in the last 24 hours accompanied by strong winds from the north-west but all slope aspects are concerned by the alert. The avalanche service have warned of very unstable snow conditions at altitude due to a succession of layers of fresh, wind blown snow. They warn about convex slopes, steep slopes and couloirs. Rain to 1500 meters on Thursday morning has helped stabilize lower altitudes.

Briançon mountain rescue said they have already had to rescue skiers who have triggered avalanches this week, fortunately without any serious injuries.
