A Russian skier has been killed by an avalanche this afternoon at Valfréjus in the Maurienne area in the Northern French Alps. The 55 year old man was skiing off piste are around 2200 meters altitude when he triggered the slide.
The incident occurred around 15h30 in the Seuil couloir complex. These are 35° north facing couloirs. The slide was relatively small measuring 60 meters wide and up to 1 meter deep in places. The victim was carried 400 meters downhill and died as a result of his injuries. The avalanche risk was 3 in the sector at the time of the incident.
