North Face has showcased a new airbag system at the Mountain Fair at Salt Lake City (Utah). Airbags are being adopted in increasing numbers by backcountry travellers. The principal is well known, built into a backpack, two sacs can be inflated in case of an avalanche, increasing rider volume and keeping them on the surface.
One of the issues affecting more widespread adoption of the system is that if you want a small pack for day touring and another for multi-day trips you need to buy two rucksacks. The North Face Modulator addresses this problem by transforming any rucksay into an ABS. The system, two airbags, gas cannister and harness can be attached to any sack with shoulder straps. The trigger can be positioned on either the left or right shoulder. It is set to be in the shops for the start of the 2015/16 season and will cost $999.
