A British skier has been killed ascending the Aiguille du Midi (3753 m) ridge late yesterday evening. His friend was able to reach the safety of the cable car station.
The two skiers were at the head of the Vallée Blanche at 21h00 in a snowstorm (presumably they'd been ski touring on the Mont Blanc and had been delayed). They were unable to descend the valley due to the conditions and called the rescue services who were unable to come to their aid. They decided to climb to the Aiguille du Midi by the narrow ridge. One of the skiers lost his footing and fell several hundred meters on the Chamonix side.
