Incident in the Couloir Gervasutti

A skier has been killed and another injured in the Couloir Gervasutti on the East Face of the Mont Blanc du Tacul today. The incident occurred around 12h45. The couloir is extremely steep. The skiers were reported as falling several hundred meters.

The skier was named as 21 year old Hugo Hoff from Serre Chevalier but a resident of les Arcs. His father is the managing director of la Clusaz. Known as a very good skier he was part of the Freeride World Qualifier circuit.

An eyewitness described seeing an wet snow avalanche above the skier who was descending "very fast" at the time but he was not able to say if the slide was the cause of the accident. The weather was very warm and the slope would have been in full sun for a number of hours. The exact causes of the incident remain to be determined.
