Weekend of unstable snow conditions in the Isère

The weekend has seen some very unstable snow conditions in the Isère following a drop in temperatures, strong winds and fresh snow down to 800 meters. On Saturday ski tourers in the department were surprised to trigger a number of avalanches in the mountains well below the 2400 meter level specified in the area’s avalanche bulletin where the risk moved from Moderate (2/3) to Considerable (3/5).

8 months for ski instructor

A ski instructor, accused of manslaughter for not having respected his safety obligation towards his clients, has been sentenced to 8 months in prison (suspended) by the court in Nice. On the 4th of February last year Jean-Alexandre Echene, an experienced and popular ski instructor in the ski resort of Isola 2000, was hired by the Darmon family to guide them on some of the area’s off-piste runs.

French Alpine Club in fatal snow slide

A group of eight ski tourers from the French Alpine Club in GAP (CAF) have been involved in an avalanche incident above Saint Paul sur Ubaye close to the border with Italy. Four of the group were caught by the snow slide while they were ski touring in the area of the Aiguille Pierre André (2857m) at around 2,700 meters altitude.

Ski tourers killed by avalanche near col du Galibier

Two ski tourers have been killed by an avalanche just before 14h00 under the north face of the Grand Galibier (3228 meters). A third member of the group was also hit by the slide but escaped without injury. The two victims were students from Lyon. The group of four skiers and snowboarders were climbing at 2,500 meters altitude in the Tierres Vielles bowl having previously skied down towards the ski resort of Valloire in the Savoie

Hautes-Alpes avalanches continue

The series of fatal avalanches continued over the weekend in the Hautes-Alpes. A 41 year old man from Lyon, ski touring with a couple of friends above Molines-en-Queyras triggered a slide yesterday at around 14h30. The group were close to the the summit of the Rua. The man was found after forty minutes under the snow using his avalanche beacon but his friends were unable to revive him.

Skier missing under Crévoux avalanche

A search restarted first thing this morning in the vain hope of finding a missing ski tourer buried under an avalanche above the ski resort of Crévoux in the Hautes-Alpes. The alert was given at 16h00 yesterday by a snowboarder who was accompanying the man.

Three deaths in avalanches

An off-piste skier has been killed by an avalanche at Tignes around midday in the Grattalu sector of Val Claret. The avalanche occurred at 2,150 meters altitude in a sector between two open ski runs. The 41 year old French skier was not wearing an avalanche beacon and the poor visibility made it hard for the rescue services to localize the slide.

Three avalanches in Haute-Savoie

Three avalanche incidents in the Haute-Savoie have resulted in minor injuries but are a reminder that the new snow has formed new slabs resting on some fragile layers at altitude on north sector slopes.

Avalanches kill four ski mountaineers

Four peple have been killed in three separate incidents in the French Alps and Pyrenees today. The first avalanche occurred around 13h00 in the Pelvoux range at 2400 meters altitude. An Italian skier in his 60s was caught in the slide. Rescued by members of his group he was pronounced dead by a doctor brought to the scene by the CRS helicopter from Briançon.

Guided group in Val d’Isère avalanche

A group with a ski instructor were hit by an avalanche while skiing off-piste yesterday in Val d’Isère. The accident occurred close to the open ski runs in the Manchet sector. The group were at 2700 meters altitude.
