An Analysis of French Avalanche Accidents for 2005-2006
The winter of 2005-2006 was the deadliest since 1970 term of French avalanche deaths. 55 people were killed in the five month period from December to April with a further two deaths in August on Mont-Blanc. Last winter the number of fatalities was double the long term average and the number of fatal accidents was nearly three times the average. In our fourth annual review of backcountry accidents we analyse the accidents and snow conditions that were behind this exceptional winter.

Mountain of debt for Tignes avalanche families
In April 2005 PisteHors reported the death of two snowboarders in a massive avalanche on the north face of the Grande Motte glacier. Sam Harber and James Rourke, both in their mid-twenties were doing a season with tour operator VIP Snowline. It was supposed to be their final run before returning to the UK. Mr Rourke’s body was discovered under meters of snow and ice the following day. Mr Harber’s body was only found 2 months after the accident when the avalanche debris began to thaw. Now the families are being threatened with a bill of over £20,000 to cover rescue costs.

Slab Avalanche Mechanics
A couple of points have come up in the avalanche incidents we have reported this winter. For example, why nothing happens when all conditions seemed to be satisfied for an avalanche and why does a slope suddenly slide that has already been skied by a dozen or more skiers? Researchers François Louchet and Alain Duclos gave some answers to these questions in a paper published in The Avalanche Review this winter. The article suggests a four stage release mechanism and has met with a lot of interest from avalanche professionals.
