Three deaths in avalanches
An off-piste skier has been killed by an avalanche at Tignes around midday in the Grattalu sector of Val Claret. The avalanche occurred at 2,150 meters altitude in a sector between two open ski runs. The 41 year old French skier was not wearing an avalanche beacon and the poor visibility made it hard for the rescue services to localize the slide.

Three avalanches in Haute-Savoie
Three avalanche incidents in the Haute-Savoie have resulted in minor injuries but are a reminder that the new snow has formed new slabs resting on some fragile layers at altitude on north sector slopes.

Avalanches kill four ski mountaineers
Four peple have been killed in three separate incidents in the French Alps and Pyrenees today. The first avalanche occurred around 13h00 in the Pelvoux range at 2400 meters altitude. An Italian skier in his 60s was caught in the slide. Rescued by members of his group he was pronounced dead by a doctor brought to the scene by the CRS helicopter from Briançon.

Guided group in Val d’Isère avalanche
A group with a ski instructor were hit by an avalanche while skiing off-piste yesterday in Val d’Isère. The accident occurred close to the open ski runs in the Manchet sector. The group were at 2700 meters altitude.

Piste Patrollers hit by avalanche at Tignes
Two off-duty members of the Tignes piste patrol have been injured, one seriously, by an avalanche shortly after midday today. One of the men, a Tignard, was trapped under the snow for half an hour. He was taken to hospital in a severe state of hypothermia; his body temperature was 28°C. Reports are that the large slide occured under the Petit Col in the Chardonnet Bowl close to the Aiguille Percee.

Where angels fear
After a long, dry autumn skiers and snowboarders were thirsty for fresh snow. Their prayers were answered when 40 to 70 cm fell over the course of Monday and Tuesday. Good news for ski resorts which had kept operating over the Christmas holiday period largely on man made snow but rescue workers, on alert since Monday, scrutinized the ski slopes with foreboding.

Ski tourers found dead in Hautes-Alps Avalanche
The bodies of two missing skier tourers were recovered after a search by the PGHM yesterday. They were on vacation at the gite de Souliers in the Queyras and had set out on a ski tour towards the lac de Souliers. Their wives became concerned when they did not return in the evening.

Series of avalanche incidents in the Alps
Reports have come in about a serious avalanche incident on the Glacier de Pendant above the Bochard gondola lift at Grands Montets, part of the Chamonix Mont-Blanc ski area. A 20 year old local man was buried under 1 meter of fresh snow at around 11h20. He had left the open Bochard run to ski some off-piste couloirs with a friend who gave the alert.

Off piste snowboarder killed at les Arcs
A seventeen year old snowboarder was found dead yesterday at 16h30 by the ski patrol at les Arcs in the Savoie. The young man, who came from the nearby Ain department had been buried by a fresh snow avalanche. He is the first avalanche fatality in France this season. The avalanche risk was 3 (Considerable) on a scale of 5 below 2200 meters, 4 (high) at altitude.

Happy Christmas for man trapped by avalanche
A ski tourer had a lucky escape after being trapped by an avalanche for over 30 minutes in the Champsaur area of the Hautes-Alpes yesterday. A couple of skiers passing the spot heard muffled cries for help and found the trapped man, a 34 year of resident of Gap, thanks to his avalanche beacon. Freed from the snow slide the man was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of cold.
