Evolution 2 in Tignes is once again organizing its Grand Raid competition, now in its 14th season. This year’s freeride event is held over six qualifying “Derbys” with the final on the 7th-9th of April. The first event is this weekend in Val d’Isère and Tignes, Evolutions 2’s playground. They regularly take clients down the many backcountry itineraries in the resort.
The Grand Raid started in 1992 as an off-piste skiing competition covering the best spots in the Alps. Each stage covers a number of different backcountry itineraries. Some well known to freeriders, others requiring more commitment. The principle is simple enough. A start and finish gate and a couple in the middle of the run. The event is open to all comers, snowboarders, skiers and telemarkers. The choice is between taking each descent at Mach 12 and risking a pileup or a more measured approach. This year the Grand Raid is stopping off in the Pyrenees in the Tourmalet ski area and on the superlative Pic du Midi. The winner in each category is invited to the final.
