The body of Chris Kedy-Cady, aged 24 and a resident of Boston, USA, has been found today under an avalanche close to the Gorges de Diosaz in the Brévent sector of Chamonix Mont Blanc.
Mr Kedy-Cady had decided to go off-piste alone despite an avalanche risk of 4 [high] at the time. A year earlier an Australian man died in the same spot after being hit by an avalanche. Mr Kedy-Cady had been skiing with a friend who preferred to remain on piste. She gave the alert when the skier failed to return to his hotel in the evening.
Despite an extensive search at the time in poor weather conditions no trace of the missing skier was found although there was evidence of many avalanches in the area. It is often only with the coming of the warmer spring weather that the snows give up those that they have taken during the winter.
