Australian Ski Mountaineer Freezes to Death near Chamonix

An Australian ski tourist, missing since Tuesday has been found dead near the the Brévent sector of the Chamonix Mont-Blanc ski domain.

The forty year old man left his accommodation at the Club Méditerranée on Tuesday afternoon with two friends.  They took the Brévent cable car and passed through the Diozas gorge where they became disorientated.  The alarm was given when they did not return in the evening.

A rescue helicopter of the Mountain Police (PGHM) found the group at 7h30 on Wednesday morning.  One man was dead, probably suffering from hypothermia after having been hit by an avalanche, the other two were airlifted to hospital in Geneva (Switzerland) and Sallanches just down the valley.
