The Degree Of Local Avalanche Risk

<< Ignoring Advice | Learning Lessons From Avalanche Accidents | Bad Route Planning >>

In nearly every case in this study the avalanche bulletin gave a moderate global risk but gave a greater or lesser degree of local risk depending on the orientation of slopes, the gradient and the altitude. This should encourage every off-piste skier to study the avalanche bulletin in great detail if there is a mention of local risk factors.

The guide Claude Rey summarised the situation with the following phrase:

"globally it is good, but locally there is a risk of death!"
