Hiking: Dent without snow

Thu, 17 December 2015

Technical

Distance: 6.1 km

Trip Reports

Vertical Climbed: 900 meters (2,953 feet)

Description

Normally I would be skiing this route but in this start of winter, well it was more like spring, there was no snow below 1900m. Because it is winter the road is blocked at 1200 meters but there was little snow below the col. I took the direct south-west ridge to the Pas de l'Oeille. Quick climbing but hard work in the afternoon sun. It was possible to climb to the 2062 meter summit without touching snow, normally crampons are essential on the steep, exposed slopes below the summit plateau.

On the plateau there is around 30cm of snow, probably skiable as there is a thick rain crust.

Weather: Warm and sunny. Spring.
