Snow and Avalanches - a Film

A few weeks ago we mentioned that the French avalanche research association (http://www.anena.org) was extending its series of Avalanche Days countrywide this winter although some were disappointed that Grenoble, self-styled capital of the Alps, was not on the schedule. To make up for this the ANENA is showing their new Snow and Avalanche film next week.

The projection is in conjunction with Grenoble Mission Montagne and the Regional Educational Documentation Center (CRDP). The film, in French, will be followed by a discussion lead by High Mountain Guides Bruno GARDENT based in La Grave and Pierre DURAND, Jean-François MYON who produces Météo France’s avalanche bulletin for the Isère department and François SIVARDIERE the director of the ANENA.

The film itself is excellent. There is an interview with local ski mountaineer Volodia Shahshahani describing the Avalanche at the Eau d’Olle. This is the second time Shahshahani has appeared in an ANENA film following an avalanche, perhaps a somewhat dubious honour.  Avalanche educator Fabien Licata also features, Fabien suffered complete memory loss following his burial, a reminder that even a successful rescue can have longer term implications for the victim. The film covers risk management, why avalanches occur and the professionals involved in forecasting, guiding and search and rescue.

The film will be shown at the CRDP in Grenoble at 20h30. Entry is free but you had better get there early as these things tend to be very popular.
