Four snowshoers have been killed and another injured in the Brescia region in Northern Italy and in the Appenins in the North-East of the country.

Three people were on snowshows in the Mortirolo pass area in the Camonica valley when they were buried by a snow slide. Two of the snow shoers were quickly found but didn’t survive the slide, a third person was found sometime later.

In a separate incident two snowshoers were caught by an avalanche on Mont Cusna in the Reggio Emilia area of the Appenins. They were found after three hours of searching by rescue workers after a snow probe located one of the victims under 150cm of snow. Transported by helicopter to hospital in Parme in a serious condition one of the victims died shortly after his arrival.
