We received our first snowfall of the season here in the Chablais. I went out for a walk with the children, the snowline was about 1800m, the real snow started at about 1900m, I hear that at 3000m there has been 30cm.

A picture from the weekend, taken at 1900m

According to my memory this snowfall is 2 weeks earlier than the first similar snowfall last year, this is just an observation, I’m not drawing any conclusions from this.

Does anyone know of an online historical record of snowfalls (piste depths would do) that is easily accessible? I see the Ski Club (in the UK) has one but I need to join to view.

I noticed that, I just drove along the autoroute and it’s quite low both sides of the valley. We had some snow in the village (Zinal) on the car this morning and I was surprised when the mist cleared there was snow on the tree, that was around 1800m.

I can see them on Iglu, for example :

Although it’s not a huge amount of detail.

ise, thanks, that’s a start, I like the way you can overlay year to year on the same graph.

Heavy snow is forecast for Sunday/Monday. Starting at 1500m in the Alpes is should descend to 1000 m. I saw there was snow on the Sancy too (Massif Central). Maybe we’ll get some turns in before October is out?

Snow down to 1300 meters on the Chartreuse this morning, maybe 1400 on the Belledonne range. You need chains for the alpine passes, col du Lauteret is snow covered and the access to the Frejus and Mont Blanc tunnels were being cleared of snow this morning.

Incredibly windy as you say. 100mph + gusts, windiest for 10 years according to Swiss TV. Snow on the Jura this morning but not sure from what altitude, 1200 meters? Still it has got to have been worked by the wind.

1200 Meters sounds about right for the Jura. We had wind gusts of 90 km/h yesterday. Apparently, the Chablais got up to 30-40cms above 2000meters, but it is very wind blown. Accoridng to Meteosuisse, we are heading for stormy foehn and high temps on Friday-Saturday. Particularly Saturday. I would expect that to rid us of most of this early season blanket…

Some snaps from this week in the Grand Massif area above Samoens and above Les Gets in the PdS, obviously snowshoeing not skiing but there’s a fair amount of snow. However, certainly above Les Gets it’s turned to wet heavy snow and it’s melting back a fair amount. At that height it won’t last too long I think. Not great photo’s, I had some camera problems so these are the best of a bad bunch but some of the group may have got better ones if they send them to me.
