Description
Le Reposoir is a hidden gem at the head of the Béol valley. Sitting between the Bornes and Aravais the relatively unspoiled village is dominated by the Pointe Percée, at 2752 meters the high point of the Aravis mountains. The lift served area extends from 920 metres to 1630 metres. There is snow making in the village.
The site was selected for the return of the bearded vulture (gypaète barbu) in 1987. The valley is environmentally sensitive and walkers and skiers should try to avoid straying to far from defined trails.
History
The monastery was founded in 1151 by Jean of Spain, a monk. He had been sent from the Grande Chartreuse monastery close to Grenoble. The monks were expelled from the monastery in 1901 becoming a hotel. The monks returned in 1932.
There have been plans to build a more extensive ski resort in the area with links to le Grand Bornand across the col de la Colombiere but the south-east facing slopes above le Reposoir are avalanche prone and environmentally sensitive. The village has preferred to keep to its agricultural roots with a small ski area in the heart of the community.
Ski Touring
Le Reposoir is a departure point for ski tours to the Bornes and Aravis such as the Pointe de Belle Cha and the Bargy.
