An avalancheur is a compressed air canon with a barrel up to six meters long. The pisteur aims the launcher at the zone at risk and fires the Nitroroc charge. The charge explodes on contact with snow. Nitroroc is a liquid explosive that is extremely unstable. To avoid being caught in the slide all this has to happen at some distance and requires a great deal of skill. The piste patrol must also carefully control access to the area. Avalancheurs have a range of around 1000 meters.
