Time to pack away the bikinis and wax down your board. Winter is coming. We’ve had a few dustings of snow already in September. Enough to enable a pair of skiers from http://www.Skitour.fr to descend from the 4000 meter Barre des Ecrins last weekend in a foot of fresh but with a ratio of ski/portage of 40/60% over 3000 meters it is not our idea of a fun day out.
However over the last 24 hours the mercury has really plummeted along with the pressure bringing snowfall above 1700 meters with a good 20cm at 2000 meters. Not really enough to ski (except at Tignes which opened this weekend) as it is very wet but sufficient to set the hearts of any winter sports enthusiasts a flutter. Watch this space.

The bad weather caught two local climbers unawares on Mont Pourri in the Savoie on Saturday. The rescue services were able to contact them by mobile phone but the bad weather meant that no rescue was possible. They spent a cold weekend at 3000 meters sheltering at the bottom of a crevasse. Rescue came at 10h30 this morning when a break in the clouds let the Civil Security helicopter pluck the pair to safety.
