Octogenerian Skier in Fatal Frozen Lake Plunge

Aldo Perono-Cit, an 81 year old from Pierre-Châtel died after the ice of the Pierre-Châtel lake, close to La Mure in the Isère department, broke under his weight.

With an air temperature approaching -10°c the elderly skier thought that the lake would support his weight according to an eyewitness who gave the alert.  At 50 meters from the banks the 4cm coating of ice gave way plunging the skier into the glacial waters below.  Despite of efforts by paramedics the skier couldn’t be revived.  Crossing the frozen lake was banned by a municipal bylaw taken in January 2002.
