A climber had a macabre find yesterday while climbing between the junction of the Glacier des Bossons and Taconnaz at 2,600 meters directly above the town of Chamonix in the Mont-Blanc range.
The climber was on a little used route due to the number of crevasses in the sector when he discovered the remains of a body partly encased in the glacier. Based on the clothing and equipment rescuers believe that the remains are about 12 years old and are searching their lists of missing persons to try and identify the remains.
Glaciers are in constant motion; this speeds up during warm periods. The ice regularly gives up secrets. Climbers often find remains of the Malabar Princess airliner that crashed on the summit over 50 years ago. The huge network of glaciers makes it hard to find missing climbers and skiers who disappear on the mountain. The Bossons sector is particularly dangerous for rescue workers.
