The 9th edition of the Grande Odyssée sled dog race starts on the Saturday (12th January 2003). The conditions are looking good again this year with abundant snow fall above 1500 meters over 1000km of trails. The Christmas warm spell affected conditions lower down but fresh snow before New Years eve and renewed snow today should improve things.
For the second year in a row the organisers have installed a “base camp” below the col de Châtillon which will host the 130 competitors and the administration. 100,000 spectators are expected to line the trails to watch this year’s event.
The event starts at Samoens at 15h with the first 60km leg from les Carroz the following day at 10h . The race finishes in the Haute Maurienne on Wednesday the 23rd January. After 11 days and 9 legs the mushers and their dogs will have climbed 30,000 meters, three and a half times the height of mount Everest.
