Of course just when we get some nice stable snow I have too much work to go out!

I’ve updated the accident statistics

http://pistehors.com/backcountry/wiki/Avalanches/Accident-Statistics

I count 18 avalanche deaths to date, which is a high figure for this time of year.

I’d have guessed it was high, it’s not just avalanche either there’s been a number of other ski accidents reported.

Without much science I’ve seen some fairly extraordinary behaviour, a couple of holiday skiers being helicopter winched out from above Zinal trying to ski down to the village via an ice-fall they must have looked at everyday from the lift, a father with two under-10 kids ducking under the ropes with kinds in tow to ski a closed run as the pisteurs blasted the slopes above him, any number of skiers in closed runs oblivious to the loaded slopes and cornices above them and so on.

You’d guess the outlook for the next few weeks was bleak as well given the time of year.
