Meteo France has issued an avalanche warning for the Hautes-Alpes department, in place until Sunday. The ranges: Pelvoux, Champsaur, Thabor, Queyras, Ubaye and Mercantour have seen considerable snowfall on the 26th October and renewed today. The current snowline is fairly high, between 2200 - 2500 meters altitude. There are very large accumulations above that altitude accompanied by strong winds (gusting to 100km/h yesterday with up to 600mm of rain in places). Slabs are in place.

Backcountry enthusiasts are reminded that early season avalanches are a common occurrence in the region.

Over a meter of snow on the glacier at les Deux Alpes, 50cm above the col de Mont Cenis, 30cm on the Col de l’Agnel. 20cm in the Western Pyrenees. The Col and tunnel de Galibier, Iseran and Izoard are now closed for the winter. Other cols are open but you need snow chains for the Lauteret.

However in general the snow has fallen above 2400 meters.

Trip report from the col du Lauteret. It was raining to 2300/2400 m today and some impressive avalanche activity

Personally I think it is stupid to risk your life in such conditions. The viz was very poor so you may be relying on the PGHM to organise a ground rescue if you get into difficulty and the avalanche above would leave you little chance of survival if you got caught.
