24 in Switzerland are carrying reports of a serious incident near Villar-d’Arène in France around the Pic de Neige Cordier

http://www.24heures.ch/actu/monde/hautes-alpes-corps-6-alpinistes-retrouves-2700-metres-2011-06-26

details looks pretty sketchy so far, there’s a couple more wire reports but nothing more

Big accident, maybe with the heatwave some of the ice bonds were melted releasing the rocks? If it is in the Breche De La Plate Des Agneaux as some people have said then it is a big, east facing couloir that has to be tackled early in the morning. Even so rocks ricochet down it all the time. Not a hard alpine climb, for two ropes to be take I think the theory of a snow/rock slide sounds likely (if the location is accurate).

The six climbers were French, a young man of 16 with five adults ages from 42 to 64. It seems likely it was a simple fall taking both groups. The accident was in the brèche de la Plate des Agneaux, which is not particularity technical, you can climb it unroped on foot without major risk (with crampons though). It is around 45 degrees at the exit but may have a cornice. It seems the idea was for the group to climb to the 3614 meter pic de Neige Cordier then re descend to the Ecrins refuge on the south side. The groups had left the refuge d’Alpe above Villar d’Arene on Saturday morning at 06h00. Both groups were wearing crampons and carrying ice axes.

Some of the reports are now saying it was an English guy who found them.

English or British.

It was the 16 year old’s birthday, the summit of the Neige Cordier was a birthday treat for him. :-(

Some info on the conditions in the Oisans from the Promontoire

http://www.refugedupromontoire.com/en-direct

The refreeze is good, the temperature just below the surface of the snow is-2° but once the sun hits the surface the snow tranforms very quickly, you sink in a lot and there are snow purges.
