The snow drought has taken its toll on the Grands Montets, the only ski area in Chamonix still open today. Originally scheduled to close on the 10th May the area will shut on Friday 29th April 2011 for “security” reasons. The last significant snowfall was on the 12th of April. The Grands Montets cable car will remain open for climbers and ski tourers until the 8th of May.

“Welcome to the Grands Montets area : Sunday 1st May 2011 : Area is open from 8:30am with : Lognan cable car and Grands Montets cablecar. Last return from Lognan at 5:15pm and from the top at 4:40pm. As of Saturday april 30th until may 8th, Lognan and Grand Montets cable cars will be open for moutaineers : Departure from 8:30am to 9:30 am from Argentiere, last return from Lognan at 1pm then between 4:30pm to 5pm. Have a nice day.”

I quoted the site in case I interpreted it wrong, but how I read it they are only open for mountaineers an hour up in the morning and an hour down in the afternoon. Only the main cable car in two stages.
