An 80 meter via ferrata as well as glass “sky terrace” are amongst two ideas aimed at attracting visitors to the 3800 meter Aiguille du Midi above le Mont Blanc in bad weather. Visitors to the terrace would be able to look straight down between their feet at over vertical 1000 meters. The terrace would also feature a themed exhibition covering the history of mountaineering in the mountain range. The 5 million euro project is awaiting approval from the town hall in Chamonix. According to the Dauphine Libere newspaper the investments will see the return trip rise to nearly 50€ for adults over the next couple of years.

OUCH! Sounds great for tourism but for a descent of the valley blanche or the many other ski touring opportunities it’s getting a bit pricey. Especially for climbers in the spring/summer who usually require the return journey. Careful Chamonix or you may get the one trip from tourists but the regular mountaineers/climbers/skiers may start to look elsewhere!
