you probably need to be a bit clearer about what you’re after there.

Do you mean the newer Silvretta Pure made for modern AT or alpine boots? Or do you mean the old Silvretta 404 Classic Backcountry which works with mountaineering boots? They’ve not made that for 10 or 15 years I think.

There’s some more modern options for approach skis for mountaineering, I was looking at some myself actually, http://www.stc-swiss.ch/ seem to work with mountaineering boots.

Just had a quick look, still a bit pricey as I can’t seem to see if you can just buy the bindings on their own?

Probably not, but Silvretta don’t make those 404’s anymore and I don’t think they come up much 2nd hand so I think you might need to look somewhere else. I’ve not seen much that works with mountaineering boots, people seem to release approach skis from time to time but they rarely last on the market for more than a year or two.

I’d like something that worked with mountaineering boots as well,, it would be nice to have something that fits to an old pair of skis just for cost reasons but something like the STC ones appeal as they’re light enough to stick on the sack and still move around which an old pari of 180cm skis just wouldn’t be.

This is a pretty niche market grin I know some people use the same boot liners in climbing and AT boots and then ski in with the shells to swop over, I can see the sense in that. Some plastic boots will fit in AT bindings, Koflachs certainly did at one point and maybe the Scarpa Vega or Omega does now but I was personally more interested in lighter non-plastic boots but my need is probably even more niche again grin

That’s exactly what I’m after as well. The smaller ski’s look pretty good, braemar mountain sports have the latest silvretta bindings but they are about 300 pounds, not a cheap option but one I may need to head for if I don’t get any joy.

to be honest I’d forgot about the Silvretta 500 a bit, I *think* it works best with plastic boots though. What kind of boots are you using?

For flexible non-plastic boots you won’t be able to ski very well. Although the Alp Control system works well, apparently: http://www.alpcontrol.com/. You’ll look like you are competing in the Para-Olympics though.

You can get quite a few alpi boots to fit in Diamir bindings, the Koflachs you’ve already mentioned but I’ve heard that Sportiva Népal work ok http://www.sportiva.com/products/prod/280.

Silvretta 500, Silvretta 404 and Emery Chrono have all been popular for approach skis as has the Nic-Impex Evo Light (I did the Cime de Gelas on Approach Skis and Evo Lights this spring: http://pistehors.com/news/forums/viewthread/618/ )

You can still by the Silvretta 500 new:

http://www.bentgate.com/silvretta500.html

The Vieux Campeur sell the Kong System (complete kit, skis, bindings and skins)

http://www.auvieuxcampeur.fr/nos-produits/ski-de-rando/materiel-de-ski-de-rando/skis-d/set-grimper-ski.html

and these

I wonder if this binding kit would work though

That’s the one I posted I think, I’d come to the conclusion it looked adequate for me. My requirement may be different from the OP though. I wanted something that I could hop onto to ride a drag lift, it was a work thing, there was a possibility of a regular gig for some snowshoe stuff where the quickest commute would be to use a drag lift rather than drive around which was at least 40mins extra. The drag takes 20 mins and lands me exactly where I need to meet clients.

Those STC’s are so small I can stick them on my sack and not worry or get the restaurant to keep them. Obviously not spending much money was a big factor grin

I intend on using either Scarpa Phantom Guides or Meindl White Mountain. Both are ice climbing mountaineering boots. I’ve not tried either yet but will go with the ones which are stiffer. My cureent ice climbing boots are GSB crampon fitting which are probably a bit light and flexible for any attempt at skiing in.

Sorry I should have really stated my needs in the original post! doh!

I want to be able to use ski’s or similar to use as approach to mountains to climb and to make getting out a bit more fun and quicker. I wouldn’t say i’m a skier (as you would have guessed! lol) more a climber but would like use to use the ski’s as a means of transport instead of snowshoes. I dont really want to cart my climbing boots in my pack and i’m not fussed about sacrificing the performance of the skiing.

Now the smaller ski’s fit my needs perfectly however budget and also the possibilty of going to Alps next spring to do a couple of days of the Haute Route from Chamonix with the aim of climbing Grand Combin and coming back. (not completing the Haute route)Would the smaller ski’s be ok on a route of this length? I personally cant see why not. Just the small prob of the price to get round! No one know of anyone selling a second hand set?? lol

I’ve seen a couple of climbers use ski blades (very similar to the small ski’s we are talking about) and after the climb they popped them on their climbing boots and tore down the mountain side. Look amazing fun and certainly beats trudging back down! They would be ok for this but not for travelling with skins on etc.

Thanks for all your help guys!!

I’d be interested how you get on with whatever you end up with. You’re going to be using stiffer boots than I would use day-to-day but I’d like to know how you get on.

I’ve just put some 404s on eBay!

All working OK, they might be just what you’re looking for.
