Rescue services appeal for prudence after avalanche death

The Savoie rescue services have appealed for prudence after a 22 year old ski tourer was killed near the col des Fours at Val d'Isere yesterday. The avalanche risk is 4/5 (High) in the area and the Savoie remains on orange alert for avalanches. A number of slides blocked roads yesterday.

Yesterday's incident occured at 16h30. The victim was part of a group of six Parisiens who wanted to spend New Year at the Fond des Fours refuge. Four of the group had gone for a ski tour in the afternoon. The victim's body was found by the PGHM. Nearly a meter of snow had fallen at altitude yesterday.

There was another avalanche near the Pic Pédros, close to Andorra, in the French Pyrenees yesterday involving four ski tourers. All four were rescued without injury.
